Famous Haitian comedian, Jessifra, visited an ongoing Haiti
en Chantier project in Mathone which will rehabilitate an
irrigation system (IOMCAP301). A native of the neighboring
North Plain commune, Jessifra has been a regular visitor at
the site. He has traveled throughout the area to encourage
people in their post-earthquake recovery efforts.

During his most recent visit, Jessifra met with members of
the PREPEP team.
He was encouraged by the
developments the program had accomplished in the region,
and offered to travel with the team on future projects to help
motivate communities. In the past, Jessifra has played a
critical role in conflict resolution between communes in
Plaine-du-Nord and l’Acul.

Another irrigation system is being completed in Coronel
(IOMCAP304), located in the first communal section of Milot.
The project, funded by Haiti en Chantier, is rehabilitating the
existing irrigation system in the area in order to capitalize on
the coming rains. Masonry canals capture and distribute
rainfall far more efficiently than the earthen canals currently
in use, allowing farmers to increase the volume and variety
of their production.

Project implementation is being carried out with paid
community labor and in close cooperation with the Ministry
of Agriculture and local farmers’ associations. The first
phase of the project built a spring box to tap into an
underground spring. The second phase will rehabilitate a
total of 400 meters of irrigation canals to distribute spring
and rain water to the surrounding area. The system should
irrigate over 85 hectares of farmland once completed. This
and other Haiti en Chantier projects employ 355 people per
day in Cap Haitien.
